Montaigne began his Trials in 1572. He became Mayor of Bordeaux in 1581. He was supporting the king without escaping fanaticism in the religious struggle of his time. He was respected by everyone for his dignity and wisdom. He first wrote his Essays, which is a great work, in the form of notebooks. Montaigne used to record the places and saints he liked in the works of old authors in libraries. He also wrote what he thought about them. If his writings are examined in chronological order, an evolution is seen in his thought. In the first phase, he seems indifferent to death, suffering, worldly troubles, like a stoic philosopher. In the second phase, he went through a period of skepticism. In the third phase, it switches to a personal philosophy, not based on the Stoics' teaching. This is an epicurean trend based on his own life.
