A Mandarin from China in the 10th century moves into the present day with the help of a »time travel compass«. He not only skips a thousand years, but also ends up in a completely different cultural area: in a modern city, whose name sounds like Min-chen to his ears and which is in Ba Yan.
Confused and inquisitive, Kao-tai embarks on an adventure that he doesn't know how it will end. In letters to his friend in the Middle Kingdom, he describes his experiences and impressions, tells of the strange life of the "bignoses", of their cultural and technical achievements, and tries to interpret observations and events that are initially incomprehensible to him.
